Description of the research topic:

The n-alkanes are frequent groundwater contaminants in Hungary. Under aerobic conditions several microbes can use these compounds as sole source of carbon and energy. Due to this, in subsurface ecosystems the contamination relatively quickly decreases the availability of dissolved oxygen. In shallow, hydrodinamically active groundwater this leads to the formation of microaerobic conditions (at least periodically), while in deeper layers strictly anaerobic conditions evolve due to the contamination. Under aerobic conditions the alkane-monooxygenase (alkB) enzymes play the key role in the degradation, while in the lack of oxygen enzymes catalyzing fumarate addition have crucial role in the process. The main aim of the research proposal is to reveal the diversity of those microbes which can degrade n-alkanes under microaerobic conditions. Furthermore, possible role of nitric oxide dismutase (Nod) gene harboring bacteria in the “cryptoaerobic” degradation of n-alkanes will be also investigated.
