Description of the research topic:
In recent years, several high-impact books have discussed how Hollywood movies depict nations and countries, and shape their image.
The book and documentary Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People by Jack G. Shaheen represented how Arabs almost always become the ”bad boys” and the number one public enemy in American movies. Hollywood still presents them as brutal, heartless and uncivilized people, while the representation of other groups and nations in Hollywood movies have changed.
In the case of the book The Screen is Red: Hollywood, Communism, and the Cold War by Bernard F. Dick, the depiction of Russians and Soviets was put under the microscope, and the book also described how the picture had changed, even if it was only a slight change.
In some cases, one movie was enough to make a huge impact on other nations; it is enough to think of the work Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and the country Kazakhstan.
At the same time, there are only a few comprehensive studies on how Hollywood (and non-Hollywood) films, novels and other elements of popular culture represent other regions, countries and nations, although they may have a decisive role in how stereotypes regarding a country or a nation are developed or shaped.
In the framework of this research topic, such aspects may be examined; for example:
How do films, novels and other elements of popular culture represent countries and nations?
What effect do these representations have on the image of each country?
What can be done in order to create a more positive representation of a country in movies and novels. and what tools can we use for this?
How is this all related to attracting film shoots, or the encouragement of film tourism (when tourists only visit a place because it was featured in a movie)?
