Description of the research topic:
What makes a city/country/region successful and livable, and how is this related to creativity?
In recent years, former physical work and physical jobs have been replaced by activities based on human creativity and knowledge in the more developed part of the world.
The rising ”creative class” has an increasing role, see for example works by Richard Florida. According to him, creativity is the connection of novelty, usefulness and surprise.
It is also clear that creativity has an effect on city development. It is not enough to launch technological parks and incubators in order to encourage creativity. A more livable city environment is necessary: museum investments, music centres, quality public spaces, excellent schools, universities, restaurants and clubs created not only (and not primarily) for tourists, but also for locals. In addition to physical rehabilitation, social inclusion, openness and affordable services are also required.
But how can all this be encouraged?
Everybody is creative actually; the main question is how the creativity of institutions and individuals can be released.
How can the three T’s of economic and social development (technology, talent, tolerance) be realized, or increased?
How can we achieve economic, scientific and cultural development?
And how can this all be measured:
Which European cities/countries/regions are the most successful in this area? Which cities are the most creative, and which are the ones we can learn the most from?
What is the connection between a creative city and prizes or acknowledgements such as the capital of culture, green capital, smart city, etc.?
Which city will be the startup capital of Europe? Or will there be more startup capitals?
How can creative cities cooperate with each other, or create networks that span great distances or even continents? What is the role of megaregions in the encouragement of creativity?
With the present topic of research, doctoral students may examine questions similar to the above.
