Description of the research topic:
Protoflavonoids, rare natural flavonoids with a non-aromatic B-ring, are valuable model compounds in view of several important pharmacological challenges. Typical cytotoxicity of such compounds, however, limits their potential use. The PhD topic aims the preparation of non-cytotoxic protoflavone derivatives, allowing to explore a new chemical space. The topic combines elements of synthetic chemistry and separation sciences; it includes the preparation of protoflavones and related p-quinols, and their selective, continuous-flow hydrogenation. The work involves intensive international collaboration, hence good English language skills are a must.
