Description of the research topic:

There are two Buxbaumia Hedw. species in Europe, both of them were thought to be rare and threatened in Hungary. According to the literature, B. aphylla is a drought tolerant acidophilous species, prefers soil as substrate, while the
legally protected, Natura2000 species, B. viridis grows on rotten wood in humid woodlands. Recent studies revealed that these statements are outdated.
Based on extensive field works both species were found to be more frequent and their phenology, substrate and habitat preference considered to be misjudged in Hungary.
The aims of the research are to summarize the historical and actual distribution of these taxa, to reveal their habitat preference, population size and phenology in Hungary. New results will sorely influence the protection of B. viridis in the future and its treatment as a species of the Annex II of the FFH-directive in Europe.
