Description of the research topic:

The recent sixfold detection of gravitational waves from both black hole
binaries and neutron star binaries opened up the era of gravitational wave
astronomy. The neutron star binary coalescence detected in both gravitational waves and gamma rays has led to a stringent constraint on the speed of the former, being identical to the speed of light within one quadrillionth parts accuracy. Many of the generalised gravity theories proposed so far do not obey this constraint, some of the remaining ones will produce ghosts and Laplacian instabilities. The research will focus on identifying the still viable generalised gravity theories and discuss gravitational wave production and their characteristics. In the process the gravitational physics across null junction hypersurfaces will be elucidated and shock waves discussed.
