Description of the research topic:

The basic problem associated with the construction of discharge-pumped KrF excimer gain modules used for subpicosecond amplification is the relatively small (~2 mJ/cm^2) saturation energy density, which limits the achievable energy. This requires amplifier geometries having large cross-sections and moderate lengths. The increase of the discharge, however decreases the speed of the pumping circuit and therefore deteriorates the criteria for a high quality discharge. Geometrical combination of two discharges (“back-to-back” design) and the use of the off-axis amplification scheme can overcome this limitation. The main goal of this research is the realization and characterization of such an amplifier.
