Description of the research topic:

The development of missing road network elements and the renewal of existing ones is a special national interest in all countries, and because the required national resources and funds are limited by nature, there is a constant need to implement the latest methods and technologies, having optimal costs, leading to the development of more efficient solutions with lower costs and/or higher service levels.

Until recently the design of pavement structures focused merely on the fatigue damage caused by traffic loads whereas numerous other effects have been neglected or assessed using only significant simplifications. Climatic effects is one of these, although these play a significant role in the performance of the pavement structure.

Research regarding climatic effects has intensified in the past years leading to a growing number of published results, however as climate varies even within continents, effects of meteorological features cannot be simply implemented from international findings to national pavement design standards.

The goal of the doctoral work is to throughout assess the acknowledged and widespread pavement design methods and the possibilities to account for the climatic effects, assess the reliability of such based on field measurements and meteorological data, possibly to make suggestions for further developments. As the assessment of forces within a pavement structure are primarily dependant on the temperature dependant behaviour of the given structural layers and variation of the load bearing capacity of the subgrade, analysis of these in particular is required based on pavement design model as well as the proposal of new relations that enable a more accurate assessment of climatic effects at the design phase.
