Description of the research topic:

As parents’ employment rates have increased across the globe, the issue and impact of mothers’ absence from home on their children has become a relevant social concern. Although an increasing number of articles discusses the role of fathers, most of the research is still dealing with mothers’ employment. It is remarkable that while for mothers the common question is the impact of employment, in the case of fathers the impact of non-employment and their interaction with children are the most frequent issues to analyze.
The topic of working parents has caused so much attention and debate that a huge number of articles has been published on this topic. It is the process of the intensification of child-related social expectations towards mothers that is present behind this phenomenon. Today's Western moms can be characterized with anxiety, perfectionism and exhaustion. In heated debates, however, it is rarely mentioned that today's working parents spend more time with their children in these societies than they did in earlier decades. Moreover, research shows that it is not the amount of time spent with children but rather the quality of time that counts.

During the doctoral research, the following specific topics might arise:

- the impact of parents' work-life balance on their children's time;
- the impact of ICT devices (mobile phones and other mobile devices) on work-life balance and parent-child relationships;
- adolescents’ view on time use and parent-child interactions;
- the implications of intensive parental roles (active fatherhood and intensive motherhood) on the balance and the parent-child relationship and children’s well-being.

The doctoral student can participate in the research project titled "Race against time "(2016-2019) at the Sociology and Social Policy Institute of the Corvinus University of Budapest.
