Description of the research topic:

Two international general population surveys are planned to conduct in 2015, both with the participation of CUB Institute of Sociology and Social Policy.

(1) ESPAD (European School Survey on Alcohol and Other Drugs) has been started in 1995 with the purpose to collect comparable data on the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among students throughout European countries, to monitor the trends of the adolescent substance use in Europe and to compare trends between countries. In 2015 the 5th wave of the data collection will be conducted. The questionnaire consists of core questions on alcohol and other drug using behaviors, optional questions on other psycho-social problems (self esteem, depression, anomie). The Hungarian questionnaire in 2011 also included questions on addictive behaviors (internet addiction, online gaming, gambling and eating disorders). The survey will be conducted on a national representative sample of 16 years old school children (N= 8 000)

(2) A national adult population survey on alcohol use is also planned in collaboration with the National Centre for Addiction (Országos Addiktológia Centrum) as a part of EU Joint Action on Alcohol. The importance of the project is that this will be the first comparable international alcohol survey among adult population with the participation of about 18 EU countries. The survey will include module questions on alcohol use, alcohol related problems, unregistered consumption, harms to others, attitudes, alcohol policy and optional country related questions by later decision. The survey will be conducted on national representatives sample of 18-65 years old population (N=2500)

Though both surveys will be conducted in strict international collaboration, the national teams have the possibility to include country specific questions according to own interest. While international reports of both surveys will be prepared by common guidelines, individual countries analyze their dataset by their own interest.

Infrastructure and Support
Interested students have the possibility to participate in a quantitative empirical survey from the beginning to the end, from the field work to preparing a country report. Participating students can formulate their own research hypothesis and analyze datasets (in case of ESPAD, Hungarian datasets are available from 1995, but there is the possibility to get international data too from 2007). We also offer the possibility to include 2-3 well formulated students’ questions in the questionnaire.
