Description of the research topic:

Anticorruption Policies Revisited: Global Trends and European Responses to the Challenge of Corruption (ANTICORRP) is a large-scale research project funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Program, which started in March 2012 and will last for five years. The project aims to investigate factors that promote or hinder the development of effective anti-corruption policies.
The Corruption and Media Work Package of ANTICORRP investigates how corruption is reflected in the media and how the representation of corruption is affected by the anti-corruption policies. The project also considers the possibility that mass media as well as individual journalists may be corrupted, and the way in which corruption news are presented, covered (or hided) may strengthen or undermine the culture of corruption. When media is captured in systemic corruption it fails to play the key role in accountability that anti-corruption strategies presume.
The PhD student is asked to carry out a quantitative content analysis of newspaper reports in order to describe and understand changes in media agendas and the particular role that journalists play. The project may be supplemented with case studies and interviews with journalists to assess the involvement of the media in corruption.
