Description of the research topic:

The initiation and progression of atherosclerosis in coronary arteries, the destabilisation of culprit lesion, the rupture of the coronary plaque, and the eventual development of myocardial infarction are complex multifactorial processes. During the last three decades, the importance of inflammatory mechanisms became evident in the progression of these processes. We have considerable knowledge about the basics of cellular and molecular mechanisms related to it. It has been justified in connection with several classical risk factors (e.g. dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity) that in the pathophysiological background of their damaging effect on arteries we can find immunopathological reactions triggered by them. They cause endothelial dysfunction which contributes to atherosclerosis. Our goal is to clarify the role of various cytokines and chemokines (e.g. CXCL11/I-TAC, IL11, IL12, IL21) in the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease, which have not been intensively studied in relation to acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases.
