Description of the research topic:
Characteristic scents are specific to many diseases due to special metabolisms of pathogens or patients. Our research group focuses on the early diagnosis of lung cancer, because the mortality and lethality of this disease is high. Additionally, the disease can be hidden while it reaches an advanced stage. Currently we start to use dogs to distinguish lung cancer patients and control volunteers by scent with GC-MS confirmation. The topic includes the identification and validation of specific biochemical biomarkers. The research is also planned to extend to other diseases. Involvement of other animals than dogs is also possible, as well as the development of an electronic nose is in short-term goals.
