Description of the research topic:
Our knowledge about the development of the central nervous system including the cerebral cortex is based mainly on results of studies on experimental animals. Less direct information is available about the development of the human cerebral cortex. Therefore, we plan examination of neuronal maturation, development of synaptic connections and myelination in normal human neo- and archicortex with immunohistochemitry and conventional histological methods. We also study morphological changes that occur during development in the cerebral cortex in aneuploidy. Our aim is to find morphological evidences that may explain the long-lasting cognitive development of healthy humans and the mental retardation found in aneuploidy.
