Description of the research topic:

In our earlier studies several chalcone and cyclic chalcone analogues showed cancer cell cytotoxic effect. On the other hand, they showed structure-dependent antioxidant (cytoprotective) effect as well. Among the investigated compounds it was the seven-membered ring derivatives that showed the most promising effects. In the framework of the present program the aim of our study is to analyze how the steric, electronic and hydrophobic properties of the compounds affect their cytotoxic and cytoprotective activities. For determination of the relevant physico-chemical properties chromatographic and spectroscopic methods are applied. The antiproliferative effects are tested on different cell cultures.
