Description of the research topic:

The aim of the PhD research is to achieve new scientific results regarding the interaction mechanisms between the hydrodynamic features of rivers, the bed material composition as well as the riverbed geometry, based on new field measurement techniques and computational modelling. Based on the results of the doctoral research new knowledge will be gained of the above mentioned phenomena, which play a major role in the hydromorphological characterization of rivers. Compared to the conventional measurement methods the development of new field techniques will provide much finer information on the riverbed characteristics both space and timewise. Furthermore, fine scale computational simulation of riverbed-flow interactions will lead to a better prediction tool for the hydromorphological conditions.
The following tasks shall be performed during the PhD research:
• Development of an underwater video based method, which provides fine scale, areal distributions of the bed material composition from the field, and so a much more detailed information compared to conventional point sampling methods
• Establish the relationship between the physical parameters of the bed sediment (mean grain diameter, standard deviation, shape of grain size distribution curve, …), hydrodynamic features and the riverbed geometry via a case study at the upper-Hungarian Danube
• Investigate the interactions between the grains in the river bed and the flow field using computational modeling to support the above assessed behavior of flow-sediment interactions.

It is expected that the candidate is familiar with the different field measurement methods and able to apply numerical hydrodynamic models. Besides the research activities the PhD candidate shall participate in lectures or field courses. It is strongly recommended that the PhD candidate applies for a half year long visiting research at one of the international research partners of the host department.
