Description of the research topic:

The terahertz (THz) spectral range is located between the microwave and the infrared parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. In lack of intense THz sources, for a long time, applications were mainly focused on passive monitoring of materials. As a result of intense development, where the Institute of Physics at University of Pécs has been playing a leading role, THz pulses with mJ-scale energy and MV/cm-scale field strength became available. With such THz pulses the active control of various degrees of freedom in matter [1], or the development of a new generation of compact particle accelerators became possible.

For new applications the detailed knowledge of the interaction and propagation of intense THz pulses in dielectrics and semiconductors is very important. The extremely high electric and magnetic fields can change the optical, electric, and magnetic properties of materials. This can influence the performance of THz sources and devices, or may even lead to damage. The goal of this work is the experimental study of materials important for THz-driven particle acceleration and other applications under the influence of extremely strong THz fields. This includes THz pump—THz probe measurements, the development of the measurement setup, and the interpretation of the experimental findings. There is also opportunity to take part in application experiments.
