Description of the research topic:

The terahertz (THz) spectral range, located between the microwave and the infrared parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, has become easily accessible with the advent of compact ultrafast solid-state laser sources. Efficient THz sources, driven by such lasers, provide THz pulses with unprecedented pulse energy and peak electric and magnetic fields. This development recently enabled the THz control of ionic, electronic, and spin degrees of freedom in matter. The THz sources being currently developed will enable the construction of compact particle accelerators, which can have a transformative impact on medicine and materials science [1].

The Institute of Physics at University of Pécs has been playing a leading role in the development of pulsed THz sources. For the generation of single- and multi-cycle THz pulses we use nonlinear optical sources, driven by intense laser pulses. In our new High-Field Terahertz Laboratory we develop THz sources with extremely high energy and field strength, suitable also for particle acceleration. We encourage motivated students to join our efforts in this exciting research. Besides source development, there is also opportunity to take part in application experiments.
