Description of the research topic:

The C-glycosyl compounds exhibit a wide range of interesting biological effects, play important roles in the formation of hydrolitically stable carbohydrate derivatives as glycomimetics, and are the active ingredients of several recent antidiabetic medications. C-Glycosyl heterocycles with five-membered rings have extensively been studied as to their syntheses and biological activities. On the other hand, similar derivatives of six-membered heterocycles and especially their C-glycopyranosyl counterparts are very scarcely known in the literature among others due to the lack of suitable precursors.
This PhD project has a dual aim: a) based on precursors synthesized recently in our group, elaboration of the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles with 1-4 heteroatoms; b) study of the possibilities for interconversion of the a forementioned heterocycles.
Under aim a) imidate, amidine and amidrazone type derivatives of anhydro-aldonic acids will be investigated to reveal the applicable protecting groups in their transformations to the target heterocycles, while under aim b) the inverse-electron demand Diels-Alder reactions of triazines and tetrazines towards pyridines and pyridazines will be studied.
