Description of the research topic:

Expansion of the usage of sensor networks involves real problems in the interoperability with the usual Internet communication technologies these days. This challenge requires research not only the technology compatibility aspects, but the data traffic characteristics, as well. Classical packet switched systems transmit protocol data units with kilobyte size and Gigabit/sec rate. Contrarily to these, sensor networks packet sizes and the transmission rate is shorter by one or two order of magnitude. At both communication systems the radio channel usage is comparable, but the bit transmission time at the sensor networks is higher with two or three order of magnitude. Sensor networks having such special characteristic, the behavior to the physical channel noise modifies significantly the communication aspect and the QoS parameters. The short range radio communication technologies and the huge amount of data transmitted slowly through sensor networks creates hot research topic from statistical analysis approach, as well.
The application of two new analytical methods can give further new interesting results for sensor network traffic. One may apply the theory of smoothly truncated Levy flights and the linear fractal model in examining the variability of traffic from self-similar to Poisson.
