Description of the research topic:

Nowadays gas turbine engines are almost exclusively used in commercial aviation, thus every effort should be made to improve their reliability, efficiency and extend their service life. Automatic control systems of turbine engines strongly affect the above mentioned properties, regardless of whether they are intended for manned or unmanned aircraft. In the previous one the workload of the pilots should be kept at a reasonable minimum; regarding the latter one, the standalone system must provide more fault tolerant characteristics. Unmanned aerial vehicles are typically smaller, therefore also micro turbine engines should be considered. Consequently the development of control systems, including the research on novel structures, must be emphasized as well.
Task:
The student should carry out simulations and experimental research in the field of turbine engine control as well. The final goal is to verify the applicability of various novel approaches in control systems including different methods as well as controlled parameters, possibly in the complete range of flight envelope depending on the airframe, in which the powerplant is intended to be used.
