Description of the research topic:
Traditional soil mapping procedure is based on the analysis of the relationship between the soil properties and the soil forming factors. The mapping procedure consists of the model development describing these relationships, and the spatial delineation of the homogeneous soil units. The fast technological development of the past few decades have made available the use of soil related digital data sources, like digital terrain models and satellite data. The relationships between the soil properties and these digital data sources can be described with mathematical, statistical-geostatistical tools, therefore automated soil mapping procedures have become available. This research topic aims to develop GIS, digital terrain model and satellite information based procedures to interpolate soil observations, derive new properties and develop functional soil maps.
