Description of the research topic:

The aim of the research is to examine the precipitation chemistry and the specific climate and meteorology of the Ciuc basin, as well as their impact on the environment.
In recent years, the alkalinisation of the study area’s atmosphere was detected. Normally, the rainwater in an unaffected environment should have a pH between 5 and 6, however in the Ciuc basin the pH values of rainwater exceeded 7, suggesting the rainwater alkalinity. Examining the rainwater samples collected on an event basis for eleven years by the local Environmental Agency, we study the relationship between the chemical components and the neutralization effect of the alkaline constituents. Given that the vegetation of the Ciuc basin is acidophilic, developed on peat bogs, the alkalinisation of the rainwater has a great impact on vegetation development. In addition, we investigate the possible pollutants sources contributing to precipitation chemistry, identifying the rains developing sources, and the pollutants origin. A case study is used to find out the effect of stubble burning and natural peat fires, thus eliminating the data that comes from known sources, which helps to determine the atmospheric geochemistry base and threshold. Observing the decrease and increase of the ionic balance, we determine the anions and cations ratio in each pH interval. In order to determine the interaction between acidic and alkaline constituents incorporated in rain, neutralization factor is used, while to evaluate more precisely the marine and non-marine contribution to the precipitation chemistry, and their tendency over time, sea salt and non-sea salt fractions were calculated.
