Description of the research topic:

Obesity is a low grade inflammatory disease characterized by accumulation of inflammatory macrophages in the adipose tissue. Inflammatory macrophages influence the adipokine secration of adipocytes leading to insulin resistance and and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Recently it was found that apoptotic cells are also accumulated in the obese adipose tissue. In this research program possible alterations of the apopto-phagocytosis program in the adipose tissue and the development of inflammation in obesity will be investigated.
