Description of the research topic:
Ischemic heart disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in modern societies. Ischemic pre- and postconditiong confer powerful protection to the ischemic/reperfused myocardium including a massive reduction in infarct size which is a major determinant of acute and long-term mortality of ischemic heart disease patients. Nevertheless, most experimental studies on cardioprotection have been undertaken in healthy young-adult animal models, in which ischemia/reperfusion is imposed in the absence of other diseases. However, ischemic heart disease in humans is a complex disorder caused by or associated with known cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, aging, and metabolic diseases such as e.g. hyperlipidemia, diabetes, insulin resistance, etc. These diseases are associated with fundamental molecular alterations that potentially affect the development of ischemia/reperfusion injury per se and responses to cardioprotective interventions. Indeed, the loss of the cardioprotective action of preconditioning has been shown first in hypercholesterolemic animals then in hypercholesterolemic patients. Since then, the disruption of known cardioprotective cellular signaling pathways have been shown in the presence of hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and aging .Therefore, there is an emerging interest in the investigation of cardioprotective mechanisms and potential cardioprotective drug candidates in the presence of co-morbidities.
