Description of the research topic:

Description of the research topic:
The developing of bio-composite materials has started in the last few years. Bio-composites consist of natural reinforcement fibres (mainly flax) and bio-resin (e.g. polylactic acids). Their mechanical material properties can reach the level of glass fibre-reinforced polymers properties. The main goal of the research work is to prepare the application of bio-composite materials for the vehicle industry from a mechanical point of view. This preparation covers every experimental investigation, mechanical modelling and constructional design procedures that are necessary for the proper vehicle engineering applications.
First one has to determine through experiments all the mechanical properties that are needed for mechanical computer analysis (stress, strength, vibration, fatigue, etc. analysis) of bio-composite vehicle-parts. Bio-composites are very new materials therefore these properties are not available in the literature. Then one has to investigate the applicability of simulation methods of numerical mechanics (stress, strength, vibration, fatigue, etc. analysis), of material laws, failure criterion, etc. for bio-composite vehicle parts. Also part of the research is the further developing and adaptation of these procedures for bio-composite vehicle elements. The final task is to prove the effective applicability of these numerical procedures for the design and dimensioning of a given bio-composite vehicle part.

Research goals:
 Determination of material properties and failure parameters of orthotropic bio-composite materials by experiments.
 Verification for bio-composites of the applicability of failure criterions that are for usual composites generally valid.
 Experimental confirmation of finite element modeling of bio-composite vehicle parts.

National and international contact related to the research topic, if there are any:
 Meshining Engineering Ltd. and Meshlin Composites Inc. Győr
