Description of the research topic:
According to the current trends in life sciences, clinical and veterinary sciences, the
prevention of illnesses is of pivotal importance. Microalgae produce a wealth of compounds
with potential in the above fields. We study the relationships between the synthesis of these
metabolites, pigments, redox-active components, lipids and other chemicals, and the
functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus.
The synthesis of the mentioned compounds and their functions in the host organisms
are strain-dependent. Microalgae gain energy and carbon source for producing these
metabolites from photosynthesis, whereas these play role in the synthesis or functioning of
the photosynthetic complexes as well as in the protection from detrimental environmental
effects.
We study the complex relationships and balance of the synthesis of the compounds
and the photosynthetic system, as well as the effects of the changes in the environmental
conditions using appropriately chosen or newly isolated microalgal strains. We use modern
biophysical, biochemical and molecular biological approaches for the study.
