Description of the research topic:
The basic problem associated with the construction of discharge-pumped KrF excimer gain modules used for subpicosecond amplification is the relatively small (~2 mJ/cm^2) saturation energy density, which limits the achievable energy. This requires amplifier geometries having large cross-sections and moderate lengths. The increase of the discharge, however decrease the speed of the pumping circuit and therefore deteriorate the criteria for a high quality discharge. To overcome this problem the cross-section of the amplifier would be increased in one dimension by matching two discharges “back-to-back” and in the other dimension by using off-axis amplification scheme. The main goal of this research is the realization and characterization of such an amplifier.
