Description of the research topic:

The project investigates changing everyday practices of adaptation and resistance to peripheralisation on a household-level in peripheralised areas in Hungary and Romania. Key task is firstly to analyse the households’ changing experiences and perceptions of socio-spatial polarisation in order to understand the socio-spatial peculiarities and commonalities of everyday practices of adaptation and resistance to peripheralisation at a household-scale in Hungary and Romania. Secondly, it should be explored how the households’ practices of overcoming existing core–periphery disparities can be strengthened by and developed into alternative strategies and praxis of local communities, social movements and new policies.
Tasks:
- Transdisciplinary and transnational review and critical analysis of related concepts and theories;
- Comparative study (HU/RO) on the socio-economic background of polarisation and peripheralisation at national and regional scale (discourse analysis, expert interviews, statistical analysis);
- Regional case study (HU) of households’ everyday practices/experiences/perceptions and the socio-economic conditions of their communities;
- Study of best practices in developing innovative strategies with private and public actors (interviews, focus groups, participant observation, community studies).
