Description of the research topic:
The functional units of the central nervous system (CNS) are the microtubule structures which are the dominant constituents of the differentiated oligodendrocytes-based myelin sheaths surrounding axons ensuring the communication between cells is through electrical synapses. In normal human brain, TPPP/p25 is expressed primarily in the oligodendrocytes, which is crucial for the differentiation of the progenitor cells. Dysfunction or lack of this protein leads to the defect of myelin sheaths and of the re-myelinization, resulting in the etiology of sclerosis multiplex. On the other hand, the enrichment of TPPP/p25 within the neurons and glia cells, as detected in pathological human brains, is a characteristic symptom of Parkinson’s disease and other have been carring out to evaluate potential anti-Parkinson agents.
