Description of the research topic:
Atrophy of the skeletal muscle fibres that form the vocal folds can be caused by, among other things, vocal fold paralysis, and can also occur during ageing. The main symptom of vocal fold atrophy, apart from hoarseness, is breathing difficulties. In today's ageing society, vocal fold atrophy caused by sarcopenia is a growing problem. Our work aims to find new therapeutic options to increase the muscle volume of atrophied vocal folds. First, we will investigate the effects of the different drugs on differentiated myotubes in vitro using molecular and cell biological methods, and then we will study the effects on muscle size in an in vivo animal model. Importantly, increasing denervated muscle volume is of therapeutic importance due to the biomechanical properties of the larynx without restoring innervation
