Description of the research topic:
In the mainstream “classical” phonological models, phonetics did not play a vital role in the description and explanation of the phonological systems of languages. This course will provide an introduction to what is known as “laboratory” or “experimental” phonology, in which the two main branches of phonetics, articulation and speech perception, play an important role in the development of sound systems. The course aims to discuss the potential influence of phonetics on phonology in the following areas: the shaping of sound inventories, various phonological processes such as voice assimilation and lenition processes (e.g., l-vocalisation) and phonotactics.
