Description of the research topic:
There are two basic systems of categorizing the vowels of English: one takes the difference to be between short and long vowels (including diphthongs), the other between lax and tense vowels. In the meanwhile the vowel system is in a constant flux: chain shifts affect almost all of the vowels. The vocalization of [l], which thereby follows the earlier path of [r], also creates a new situation in accents where this change happens
