Description of the research topic:

The spectra and intensity of solar light reaching the surface of the Earth are changing significantly due to spatial and temporal gradients. Photoautotrophic organisms, including freshwater oxygen generating photoautotrophs, have developed a number of survival strategies to adapt to these changing conditions. Changes in light conditions can be long-term or short-term, thus the different (molecular) responses have similar time scales. A special form of long-term change is the so-called chromatic acclimatization, where altered wavelength illumination induces a significant change in the pigment composition of a given microorganism. The aim of the research is to study short- and long-term acclimatization processes, mainly using cyanobacteria and algae isolated in Hungary, additionally to study the optimal and transient (vulnerable) states during these processes. Methods to be used: cultivation of algae and cyanobacteria on various growing lights; biophysical and spectroscopic measurement methods: UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, PAM fluorimetry, pigment analysis; confocal and fluorescence microscopy; data recording and data analysis, additionally modelling of natural light conditions in lakes under laboratory conditions.
