Description of the research topic:

Every biological fluid, including bovine milk, contains extracellular vesicles in vast numbers (approx. 10E8/ml). Exosomes present a large subgroup of extracelular vesicles that is biologically relevant and easy to characterise. The number and bioactive cargo of exosomes show significant differences when healthy and pathological conditions are compared. Based on literature data vesicles, and within that exosomes may contribute to inter species transmission of pathogen-like agents. During our research we plan to process bovine milk from cows of diverse health status (e.g. healthy control, pregnant, inflammatory disease-burdened). We plan to enrich exosomes for characterisation by morphological parameters (size and number distribution). This will be followed by the evaluation and characterisation of their bioactive cargo (miRNA, cytokine and BMMF-content). Significant basic research and applied research results, publications in high-ranked journals and doctoral theses are expected to yield from bovine milk vesicle research.
