Description of the research topic:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) – an autoimmune, inflammatory disease of the central nervous system with degenerative features – is the most common neurological disorder of young adults. Despite being considered as an autoimmune disease of the myelin sheets earlier, it has become clear now that MS affects the brain as a whole. Moreover, in the late progression phase of the disease, the grey matter injury evoked by the degeneration of demyelinated axons and neurons is of utmost importance.
MS is a heterogeneous disease. In the early phase, clinically active phases (relapse) alternate with the inactive phases, i.e. remissions (relapsing-remitting MS, RRMS). Without treatment, the disease transforms to secondary progressive MS (SPMS) in 50% of the patients: in this state, the continuous clinical deterioration results in irreversibly progrediating disability.
The cause of conversion from RRMS to SPMS is unknown. As the secondary progression starts, the current therapies lose their effectiveness, and irreversible, progressive disabilities develop. Therefore, biomarkers capable to predict the risk for secondary progression at an early phase are highly needed.
In this research topic, we investigate the usability of currently available and novel biomarkers (both MRI and soluble ones) for estimating progression in MS.
