Description of the research topic:

One of the global characteristics of education policy over the past few decades is that in many societies there has been, and is still being, a significant withdrawal of the state from what was previously a predominantly public service sector.
Within the framework of educational privatization, this trend is being examined in Hungary. In this context, it is possible to investigate the different educational services and actors emerging within and complementing public education, which are new or gaining importance in comparison to the traditional, 'mainstream' forms of education. These include: school choice at both primary and secondary level and the consequent development of local 'education quasi-markets'; the development of the relationship between different types of school maintainers (public-church-private); the emergence of private tutoring, home-schoolers and study groups; and the different forms of shadow education, especially secondary and tertiary preparatory courses, and their impact on selection processes within mainstream education.
