Description of the research topic:

The basic question of the research is the existential opportunities in the common economic space created after Hungary's accession to the European Union, who are mobilized to leave Hungary and take up work, settle in another EU country, and imagine continuing their lives. We examine whether the decision is based on the intention to settle in a particular country of destination or whether the union within the Schengen borders is the area where the persons involved in the investigation wish to assert themselves. We consider it important to answer the question of what changes characterize the key areas of life of Hungarian European workers after the mobility decision, including private life, social relations, work, and well-being. By researching the assessment of change, we aim to explore the structure and conflicts of attributions of success and failure of mobile European workers. We are curious about changes in the level of demand, changes in social and societal status before and after a mobility decision, and experiencing the changes. In the case of success in work, we suspect the decisive role of the degree obtained during higher education: in the medical and technical fields we tend to be relatively successful, in the case of the degree in humanities and economics we are likely to struggle for success. Mobility narratives allow for the examination of at least three frameworks. The first, which, of course, can only be examined retrospectively, is the pre-mobility decision reference that underlined the decision, suggesting that mobility is more advantageous than staying at home. After the decision, the question of reference arises again, namely that the person has to decide whether he has been in the right place or in the wrong place, as he could have gone to another country. The third and most important reference takes place in the new environment, comparing one's own status with others, partly with similar Hungarians, partly with other migrants, partly with natives, and most importantly with those who have remained at home.
