Description of the research topic:

The digitalization of industrial automation systems, referred to as Industry 4.0, introduces cellular mobile technologies into the repertoire of factories. Industrial automation systems differ from consumer-oriented applications in that they expect higher reliability, low latency, low packet loss (URLLC), and in some cases higher bandwidth as well. On the other hand there is also the massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) required by smart metering, smart cities, smart transportation and logistics, smart grids, etc., where there is an enormous number of low bit rate UEs that spend much more time in sleep mode than online.

The strong requirements on Quality of Service (or Quality of Experience: QoS/QoE) technologies available in 5G systems and the variety of traffic requirements calls for introducing many schemes ranging from the scheduling at the NR radio interface, through the access and the core of these networks, up to the optical backbone network carrying this high volume traffic of 5G users.

Research areas to be explored by the PhD candidate (graduate student) will include:
• Policy control features such as traffic prioritization, scheduling, latency and bandwidth optimizations
• Optical access network optimization for 5G requirements
• Optimization of mappings, abstractions, network services and functions to virtual machines and other network and computing resources (NFV optimization)
• Optical backbone optimization for 5G traffic, with high resilience, low latency and synchronization requirements
• Machine Learning (ML), Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and various heuristics are to be used
