Description of the research topic:

Spatial data infrastructures (SDI) are frameworks to store and exchange geographic data, meta data and services combined with the people that use the infrastructure and with the policies that provide the rules for using the infrastructure. The development of local or corporate SDIs is important to structure the enormous amounts of spatial data that are (becoming) available. Integration of local SDIs into the current cloud-based context becomes increasingly important to ensure the exchange of data and services with the global environment. This integration provides many possibilities as well as challenges. The scientific field of Geoinformatics has an important task to provide solutions to challenges and opportunities like location-based services, big data, dynamic visualization, 3D analysis, automated sensor networks, open data and software, and volunteered GIS.
