Description of the research topic:

The Sarmatian Period lasted between 20-400 AD in the Carpathian Basin, and archaeologists distinguish there sub-periods based on findings. Sarmatians arrived from the Pontic Steppes, where thay formed an empire for nearly 1000 years. We shall sequence whole genomes from Sarmatian Period samples, and compare these to pre-Sarmatian and post-Sarmatian genomes from the Carpathian Basin, as well as to Sarmatian genomes from the Pontic Steppe. Thus we can shed light on the origin of our Sarmatians and their relations to Pontic Sarmatians and to peoples from other cultures in the Carpathian Basin.
