Description of the research topic:

The fundamental idea behind the metamaterial research is that the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter is governed not only by the chemical composition, but subwavelength structuring can produce novel properties, not available in bulk form. Metamaterials allows to reduce the size and to enhance the performance of antennas, which makes this technology suitable for 5G systems. The key question of this PhD research is how to choose the geometry and the dimensions of metasurfaces to engineer the collective response of subwavelength elements in order to increase the directivity and the gain of broadband or multiband microwave antennas. The project aims the development of metasurface enhanced antennas, which can be fabricated with conventional printed circuit board technology, or 3D printed.
