Description of the research topic:

In urban areas, the number of tunnels excavated in soft ground has increased rapidly during recent years. To minimize the risk of damage related to tunnel construction the tunnel designers need to be able to make reliable predictions of the ground deformations induced by tunnelling and their effects on any adjacent structures.
In the proposed research study, a closed-form solution will be discussed to assess the displacement field around the tunnel. The displacements estimated will be imposed on the nearby buildings in simplified boundary element analyses to compute deformations. The used analytical method will be verified with a case history and with numerical modelling. Comparisons will be made to evaluate the settlement related to the passing of the tunnel face. The influence of the distance of the tunnel face and the structure and various ground conditions also will be presented.
