Description of the research topic:

In recent times, one of the greatest challenges of nature conservation is to tackle the invasion of non-native species, compromising natural ecosystems and the provisioning of ecosystem services to human societies. Research so far has mostly focussed on the effects of species that had already reached high abundance and caused significant damage to ecosystems or agricultural production systems, and the chances for their complete eradication is limited. Conversely, this proposal targets the ecological evaluation and risk assessment of newly appeared species, using state-of-the-art methods. Since these species are in an early phase of invasion, there may be significant chance for efficiently suppressing them, if needed. To this end, this research represents a proactive approach of invasion ecology and the results can directly guide applied nature conservation and habitat management interventions, while also providing useful novel insights into the theory of biological invasion.
