Description of the research topic:

The level of service (LOS) is a measure of quality and performance of the transport facilities. For walkway, the LOS is based on the average pedestrian space and average flow rate. The pedestrian flow rate, which incorporates pedestrian speed, density, and volume, is equivalent to vehicular flow.

Research into non-vehicular traffic is fairly young and the dimensionality of the problem raises new questions about the definition of traffic flows. How to define the speed of a pedestrian? How to determine the density?

Applications of pedestrian simulation models at macroscopic and microscopic level simulate the aggregate traffic flow as the result of the interaction between the pedestrians that make up the crowd.

An LOS model can help determine areas where pedestrian levels of service is insufficient and identify possible safety problems.

Pedestrian behaviour, urban environment, traffic laws, road safety differ by country. A systematic comparison of pedestrian LOS in different countries would enhance the scientific value of the research.
