Description of the research topic:
Proteasomal degradation is important in cell division, development, in the normal cellular homeostasis and in apoptosis. Apart from the well-known 26S proteasome, there are specialized proteasomes also, such as the immunoproteasome or the spermatoproteasome in mammals, but the function of them are less known. Drosophila melanogaster has testis-specific proteasomal subunits, both in the catalytic and in the regulatory part of the proteasome. The precise molecular function of the testis-specific proteasome is not known. The project focuses on the genetic and molecular characterization and the identification of substrates of the testis-specific proteasome.
