Description of the research topic:

Although the main cereal sources in Europe are maize and wheat, the diversification of the available cereals would moderate the price fluctuations. The improvement of new cultivars is essential to reduce annual yield fluctuations. It can be achieved by increasing the abiotic and biotic stress resistance of breeding lines. However, there is no information how the nutrient content and the concentration of antinutritive factors of the new, resistant lines would change.
The most promising varieties of oats and barley will be selected for feed and food utilization in the Agricultural Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Martonvasar. The oats, and barley seeds will be evaluated with animal balance trials and growth test with different animal species. Not only the production traits, but also the quality of animal products (egg, chicken meat) is going to be evaluated.
In the frame of the PhD work in three years about 180-200 barley and oats will be evaluated. Both the nutrient content and the ratio of anti-nutritive substances (soluble beta glucans) will be determined. Yearly the most favourable 3 oats and 6 barley seeds will be used to in balance trials and the ileal digestibility of amino acids, the digestibility of starch, fat are determined at two inclusion rates in 8 replicates with broiler chickens. Growth tests with broiler chickens will be carried out at University of Pannonia. According to the results of these digestibility trials model growth tests with broilers will be carried out in the third year. At the end the optimal inclusion rates of seeds is calculated and new nutritional technologies for poultry are established.
The Department of Animal Sciences has been active on evaluating the nutritive values of the different feed ingredients for several decades. The department has all the facilities (balance cages, laboratory, feed manufacture etc.) to carry out the proposed experiments.
Running projects will provide the financial sources required.
