Carbonates in natural CO2 occurrences - their origin and formation processes

Description of the research topic:

"The enhanced CO2 concentration, which increased since industrial revolution from 280 ppm to recent 400 ppm, is one of the main reasons for climate change. One of the most perspective tools that we can use to decrease the atmospheric CO2 concentration is CO2 storage into various geological reservoirs. The detailed mineralogical, petrologic and geochemical studies of the natural CO2 reservoirs can help to understand the physical and chemical processes that were triggered by the CO2 flooding. Especially, those geological formations (e.g. sandstone of Szolnoki Formation) would be taken into consideration which have both CO2-free and CO2-bearing occurrences, providing a great opportunity to distinguish the digenetic and CO2 flooding-related mineral reactions, as well as to determine the processes induced by CO2 flooding and their sequence.
Besides the fundamental petrographic-physical and geochemical-chemical investigations, the Ph.D. research program will focus on stable isotope analysis of different carbonate phases because these measurements can reveal the processes, which are responsible for the formation of the carbonate minerals and their origin. Thus, not only the conventional bulk rock analysis will be integrated in the research but also mineral specific measurements."
