Description of the research topic:

Goal: Determining the intrinsic and inter-areal connections between functionally identified (somatotopy, tactile submodality including pressure, flutter and vibration) modules of the somatosensory cortex. The project is part of our ongoing research focusing on the exploration of the structure-function relationship at a high, mesoscale resolution in the somatosensory cortex in collaboration with a foreign partner. We have already explored the neural connectivity between functionally identified micro-regions of areas 3b and 1. The proposed project will focus on the remaining areas of SI i.e. areas 3a and 2. This way we aim to better understand how information originating from the distal finger pad is integrated with information originating from other somatotopic or submodality specific loci. Task: Electrophysiological and fMRI mapping of the distal finger pad representations, which play prominent role in tactile functions, and the submodality sensitivity (pressure, flutter, vibration) of the activated cortical regions in non-human primates. This part of the project is made in the lab of foreign collaborator. Mapping the connections of the physiologically identified regions by neuronal tract tracing. Analysing the relationship of the anatomical connectivity and functional maps. Histology, collection and analyses of microscopic data will be performed at the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology of the Semmelweis University as well as at the Wigner RCP of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
