Description of the research topic:

The doctoral dissertation will fit into those trends of cultural studies which are gaining ground in Hungarian literary history. Among research fields stepping out of text-centered analysis (media- and image-theoretical interpretations etc.) the exploration of the anthropological registers of literary texts will have central focus in the research. Recent literary historical investigations in Hungary follow patterns of cultural anthropology which originate from ethnology adopting an anthropological viewpoint sensible to the otherness of historical phenomena. The dissertation will return to the other philosophical-hermeneutical branch of anthropology, looking for answers for the following questions: What are those basic human-anthropological patterns that appear in 19th-century prose texts and oeuvres? What kind of anthropology does a literary text establish, and how can a dialogue be created between different notions of humanity appearing in the philosophical and historical discourses of the era? It also has to be made clear what are those anthropological concepts and approaches that are present in the practice of literary historical investigations, and what kind of anthropological models can be applied to the field of literary interpretation.
